The Health Careers program provides training for students who wish to pursue a career in the medical field. Students will become immersed in a rigorous course of study which integrates important concepts in science, math, and skill based training. This program includes an honors option and will prepare students to obtain a variety of related credentials to include Certified Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Terminology, OSHA, Adult and Infant CPR, First Aid, and AED Fibrillator.
In order to become eligible to take the Rhode Island Department of Health Certified Nursing Assistant exam, students must accumulate a minimum of twenty clinical hours in off site facilities. Our partnership sites include West View Nursing Home, Alpine Nursing Home, Coventry Health Center, Woodpecker Hill Nursing Home, Tamarisk Assisted Living and Kent Hospital. During Health Careers 3, students will participate in co-ops in the various facilities to complete the twenty hour requirement and to practice skills in a real world environment in preparation to obtain their CNA license. As licensed CNAs, senior students will complete practicum hours at Kent Hospital and will be exposed to the diverse areas of a hospital which include a variety of departments such as the Emergency Room, Diagnostic Imaging, Rehabilitation, Intensive Care, Women’s Care, and Nursery to name a few. This exposure can help students to make informed decisions about their career concentration and options for post-secondary education in the health care field.
Health Careers students also participate in district vision screenings, the organization of blood drives at the high school, health and wellness screenings, skin cancer assessments, and much more.
